Eat Your Veggies

Claire and I did some shopping the other day and got some chicken for stir fry.  A lot of people I have talked to here inadvertently become vegetarians because it’s so cheap to just make pasta with all the vegetables that everyone brings home.  Claire and I have also been eating a lot of pasta and sandwiches.  Every day we work, we each bring one Nutella sandwich, one  peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, crackers, and apples.  You get really hungry working in a field all day.  So the chicken was a nice change.  Been eating plenty of vegetables too, probably more than I ever have in my life, but they’re everywhere around the hostel so it’s convenient, haha.

Claire and I asked one of the hostel managers if we could break the no drinking policy tomorrow since it will the 4th of July here.  But we were denied, apparently that’s not fair to all the non-US tenants, there’s also a ton of British people here 🙂

Last night was fun.  One of the roomies was leaving today so we all went out and had a goodbye drink at one of the local pubs.  Claire was going to move in to my unit today to the vacant spot, but some miscommunication led to that not happening.  Which was disappointing, but she’s on the waiting list now and hangs out at my place quite a bit anyway.  We’re managing and it’s nice to have some space, haha.

Claire and I weeded a sweet potato field yesterday at work.  It was actually not a bad job.  We just had to pull up the big weeds and scan the field, a bit dirty, but not difficult.  It’s been so hot here though that it does get a bit scalding in the fields.  Claire and I found out through two other Americans staying here that we can get a second year on our visas if we work 3 months so we plan on staying that long.  It doesn’t mean I will be here for two years, but it will give me the option of coming back for a year after I go back to the states.

Apologies that these blog entries are getting a little stream of consciousness-like.  But since I don’t have internet access unless I go to the library, I’m kind of just typing as I think of things.  Also, no pics for awhile since Claire and I have mostly been looking dirty and tired, you’re not missing much, haha.

Jennie-Happy 21st birthday!  I’d take you out for a drink if I was home, but we’ll definitely do it when I come back.  Hope you have a good birthday and I love you!

  1. Hot????

    Wait until summer 🙂

It would be warm working in the fields though.

    • Haha, I’ve heard! I still can’t believe there’s scarves and mittens in all the stores in Bundy. Sydney I could understand, but here, it’s just so warm even for winter 🙂 It does get quite cold at night/in the morning though.

  2. We’re going to the lake today for the 4th of July.
There will be lots of fireworks – sorry you’re going
to miss all that – but that’s the way it goes when
you go to Australia! Eat all your veggies – you
will be so healthy when you come home. Love,
    Grandma

    • There’s 2 other Americans at the hostel Grandma, we might get some sparklers and go down to the park tonight 🙂 Love you!

  3. Hey kiddo,
Sounds like you are working hard and you are apparently very thirsty because you mentioned drinks several times in your recent entry:P
Dad and I are both off this weekend and aren’t
going anywhere special, so we are having a party for Jennies birthday and the 4th. We invited a few stragglers who also weren’t going anywhere and it looks like we should have about 30 people. Love you bunches and miss you more!
    Mom
